Angels ownership change just made future front office better whether John Mozeliak stays or not

While it seems like Los Angeles Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak will stay aboard, even after the team is likely to be sold to new owner Stan Kroenke, the ownership change will still have some pretty massive ramifications for the front office.

The biggest question mark when Mozeliak took over was how much autonomy he’d have given Arte Moreno’s reputation for meddling in baseball matters. The early signs were good ,especially since Mozeliak said most of his communication was with team president Molly Jolly rather than Moreno, which probably should have been a signal that Moreno was already planning his exit.

Now that Moreno is out of the picture, that question is largely removed. Kroenke does not seem to be as meddlesome an owner as Moreno. With the Los Angeles Rams he has let the football operations team act with independence for the most part and it has resulted in the Rams being one of the best franchises in the NFL the past decade.

Chances are with an experienced executive like Mozeliak in charge, Kroenke will be more than content to let him run things as he sees fit. But a front office is much more than just the person at the top. Removing Moreno from the equation will help the Angels attract better talent in the entire front office.

Stan Kroenke seems ideally suited to turn the Angels into a contender

Even if Mozeliak stays on in a president of baseball operations role, he will likely hire a GM under him who can help him try to turn the Angels into a contender. Had Moreno still been involved, there’s a good chance some candidates would have been scared away for fear that if things went bad Moreno would lash out or start to try to take back control from Mozeliak.

Now the Angels are a pretty enticing destination for promising young executives who would like to work with and learn from a guy like Mozeliak who has a pretty great reputation even if things didn’t go all that great in his last few years with the St. Louis Cardinals.

And even if for some reason Mozeliak decides to leave, which seems unlikely but could happen if he decides he doesn’t want to have a full-time job so soon after his left the Cardinals, then that means the Halos will actually be able to get some of the best executive candidates interested whereas many probably would have stayed away if Moreno remained in the fold.

Kroenke taking over just seems to be a positive for the Angels in pretty much every way. Both current and former players seem excited by the change and no matter what happens with Mozeliak the new owner will help attract better front office talent to an organization that desperately needs it.
