George Klassen just made his case for the Angels' 2027 rotation even stronger

Acquired as part of the Carlos Estévez trade deadline deal in 2024, George Klassen has had a bumpy ride on his way to Anaheim. A line drive off his head in 2025 derailed a lot of his momentum, and by the time Opening Day this year came, he had been surpassed by Tyler Bremner as the top pitching prospect in the organization.

Klassen persevered, however, and made his MLB debut in April. He earned two starts, neither of which went well, giving up a combined seven runs through 4⅔ innings. He was then swiftly demoted back to Triple-A.

As fate would have it, the Los Angeles Angels opened a long-term spot in their rotation at this year's deadline by sending José Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays for a package headlined by top prospect Arjun Nimmala. It was Klassen who was called back up to take his vacated position.

Though the sample size is small, it's safe to say the 24-year-old is making the most of his second opportunity in the majors.

George Klassen is getting more confident, which bodes well for the Angels' rotation

After shutting down the Miami Marlins through four innings in his first start back, Klassen really impressed against the Texas Rangers in an AL West showdown earlier this week. He handled six efficient innings, allowing just two runs en route to his first victory in the big leagues.

It was a confident outing, as he attacked the strike zone early (17 of 24 at-bats began with first pitch strikes) and generated swings and misses frequently, including whiff rates above 40% with both his slider and changeup. His command also got better as the game wore on, as he didn't issue a single walk after the second inning.

Development is never linear in the big leagues, especially for pitchers, so Angels fans shouldn't expect Klassen to start racking up quality starts every time he goes out there. But he's got big stuff and a penchant for inducing ground balls, which is a good combination for someone who is angling to start for the foreseeable future.

The Angels will certainly have the opportunity to offer Klassen that chance. Soriano is already gone, and Reid Detmers might not be far behind after he was nearly traded to the Chicago Cubs at the deadline as well.

Add to it the struggles of fellow rookie Ryan Johnson (6.71 ERA, -0.5 fWAR) and Grayson Rodriguez (7.20 ERA, nine homers allowed in 55 innings), and it's possible that the Halos will have open tryouts for four of their five rotation spots next year alongside Walbert Ureña.

Klassen won't just be gifted one of those openings, but he's certainly making a strong second impression right now. If he continues to get better down the stretch, he should have an inside track on an Opening Day job for the 2027 season.
